The question of the season:

Is It a Cold or seasonal Allergies? How to Tell the Difference

Certified Herbalist & Certified Doula

There's a very specific kind of annoyance that shows up this time of year. Eyes, sinuses, lungs, head — all feel like they're under siege at once. And in that in-between stretch from cold season to allergy season, most people just guess and hope for the best.

You don't have to guess. Here's how to read the signals your body is already sending you.

Cold vs Seasonal Allergy symptoms

One of the most helpful ways to tell the difference between a cold and seasonal allergies is to look at the full picture, not just a runny nose or a cough. Both can affect the same airways and share similar symptoms, but they tend to show up in the body in different ways.

The symptom pattern stands out.

Some patterns can help distinguish what your body may be responding to. Fever and body aches are more commonly associated with colds, while itchy, watery eyes and an itchy nose are more commonly linked to seasonal allergies. Colds often begin with a sore throat, which is less typical with allergies.

Changes in mucus can also offer clues. Yellow or green mucus can reflect your body’s natural immune response, while clear, watery mucus is more often associated with environmental triggers like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander moving through the nasal passages.

Allergens vs Environmental Triggers

Allergens such as pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander can lead to seasonal allergy symptoms by stimulating the immune system and the release of histamine. In contrast, colds are typically associated with viruses that affect the upper respiratory tract, leading to an immune response that may include inflammation and mucus production.

The same areas of the body are involved, but the underlying triggers are different.

A helpful distinction: Fever and body aches are more commonly associated with colds, while itchy, watery eyes and an itchy nose are more commonly linked to seasonal allergies. A runny nose on its own doesn’t offer much clarity — looking at the full pattern of symptoms is more useful.

Patterns more commonly associated with a cold

early Phase

Gradual onset. Sneezing, scratchy throat, fatigue as your body begins to respond.

Middle Phase

Congestion may become more noticeable, and coughing can increase. If a fever is present, it may be more noticeable during this time.

Recovery Phase

Symptoms often begin to improve, though timing can vary. Many people feel better within about a week, but it can take longer for some.

These patterns are general and can vary from person to person.

Patterns often associated with seasonal allergies:

fast and continuous

Symptoms can come on quickly after exposure and may continue while the trigger is present. If symptoms seem to linger for weeks or follow a seasonal pattern, they may be more consistent with allergies than a short-term illness.

environment-linked

Symptoms often improve when you leave the trigger environment. Experiencing similar symptoms during the same season each year may point to a recurring pattern.

"If it's just you, and symptoms show up around certain environments — allergies are much more likely at play."  - Dr. Erin Stokes, ND
